La Casa Almodovar comes ALIVE at Christmas time! As the festive season approaches, our small NYC apartment transforms into a winter wonderland, brimming with holiday cheer. Growing up, Christmas was always my favorite holiday, filled with cherished family traditions. One of my fondest memories was the day we’d lug all those giant cardboard boxes (remember those old desktop computer boxes from the 90s?) up from the basement and unload our Christmas wares—truly decking the halls. Fast forward to today, and though we live in a small space, we have our own cardboard boxes that emerge the day after Thanksgiving, ready to sprinkle magic throughout our home.
Fun fact: Pre-kids, I had an actual theme (complete with a name!) every year for our Christmas decorations. One year was Winter Wonderland with lots of snowy motifs, another year was Woodland Creatures where I covered small animal figurines in gold glitter… Consider yourself warned: I am a Christmas fanatic!
Festive Theme Ideas for Your Hallway Christmas decor
Over the years, we’ve experimented with various themes to transform our long hallway into a Christmas wonderland. Here are some of our favorite ideas:
1. Winter Wonderland
During our Winter Wonderland year, we transformed our hallway into a magical snowy passage. We cut probably 50 paper snowflakes and hung them from the ceiling at different heights. The key element here was the white string lights lining the top edge of the ceiling on either side. This simple display created a warm glow and a charming atmosphere, drawing the eye upwards toward the decorations.
This is an easy way to create an instant festive feel, and it’s perfect for small spaces. The paper snowflakes don’t take up any floor space, making it an ideal solution for narrow hallways. Plus, it’s a great activity to do with kids! I think this has been one of my favorite Christmas decorations for the hallway.
2. Rustic Snowflake Forest
Another year, we made large snowflakes out of popsicle sticks, adding a touch of green by gluing small sprigs of evergreen on top. We hung these at various heights along the hallway walls. This gave our eyes something interesting to look at as we walked down the hall without having anything take up space or get in our way.
Remember, with a long narrow hallway, you want to be sure not to make it more narrow than it already is. Wall decorations are a perfect way to add festive cheer without compromising on space.
3. Cardboard Gingerbread Village
One of our more creative endeavors involved cutting out a LOT of gingerbread houses from cardboard and outlining them with white markers. We hung these along the length of the hallway, creating a charming gingerbread village. This was another fun way to take advantage of the full length of the hallway and add a personal touch to our Christmas decorations. But I’ll warn you: this was our most labor-intensive Christmas project yet! We’ve actually salvaged most of our cardboard cut-outs and are storing them behind the couch. One year we’ll put them up again when we don’t have a child who’s at the…destructive…stage of toddlerhood!
4. Bedazzled Boughs
For a different take on traditional garlands (and because I don’t actually know how to make a garland!), one year we made small garlands, hung them vertically, and wrapped them in lights to create a series of festive “light posts” to pass through on your trek down the hallway. This offered an interesting visual effect and added depth to the space without cluttering the walkway.

I always make a Christmas wreath from scraps at the tree farm and hang it on our door. It’s the first thing visitors see and instantly sets a festive welcome. If you’re not feeling crafty, there are many beautiful pre-made wreaths available. Consider adding some red berries or pine cones for extra flair!
2. Christmas Card Display
We bought a simple Christmas card holder from IKEA, which we sometimes put in our kids’ room and sometimes in the hallway. It’s a great way to display all the season’s greetings and adds a personal touch to your decor. You could also use ribbon and clothespins to create a DIY card display along your hallway.
3. Cozy Touches
The small bench in our entryway is the perfect place for a Christmas pillow. Adding holiday pillows or a festive throw to your entryway seating not only looks inviting but also adds a cozy touch for when you’re putting on or taking off winter boots.

While we never use faux greenery (because we like to be difficult), there’s definitely a plus to the artificial options! Real greenery won’t last as long, though it might last longer if you mist it every other day or so (I haven’t personally been committed enough to test this out). Usually, it’s just a giant mess when we go to take down all our greenery decor at the end of the season.
If you do opt for real greenery, consider garlands draped along the hallway walls or small wreaths hung at intervals. The smell of fresh pine is hard to beat for getting into the Christmas spirit!
5. Festive Entryway
Our entryway feeds right into our long hallway, so we usually extend our Christmas decor to this space as well. On the console table (which is actually an IKEA Bissa shoe cabinet!), we place some small decorations to ensure that every room has a little festive touch.

- Mini Christmas trees: We’ve made these by gluing a tiny sprig of pine into a cork (from a wine bottle) and placing them in empty spaces around the apartment.
