En Nuestra Casa
When we first remodeled our living room, we had dark wood floors with a beauuuuutiful cowhide rug. Ahhhh the cowhide rug. I still dream about it sometimes.

Somewhere along the way, we realized the cowhide was not enough cushioning for when we’d sit on the floor. So instead, we ended up getting a huge dark brown jute rug (from IKEA, I think?) to put under it. Nice texture, nice layered look.
We originally bought a cowhide because (duh) they’re beautiful, but they’re also supposed to be durable. Turns out that wasn’t the case for us.
A few years later, we had a baby crawling around the living room. We quickly realized he (and we) would just be covered in hair from this rug.
That combined with the lack of cushioning and our original floors just falling apart in too many areas. It forced us to bite the bullet and have the entire floor redone. I went out on a limb and opted for light-colored floors instead of dark, which totally changed the aesthetic and presented a new opportunity for a totally different rug.
Not sure where it came from, but apparently I have a strong propensity toward natural things (hello, 3 home births and unschooling my children and and and…), so I was immediately drawn to wool. I drooled over some beautiful West Elm rugs and somehow (miraculously!) found one on Facebook marketplace. Normally I’d advise against buying a used rug. You just don’t know who it’s coming from and what kind of things it’s been through! But this time, I took a bit of a risk! The girl we got it from was like 22 and just in NYC for the summer or something and bought the rug at the beginning of her stay, just a few months prior.
And now, here we are, 6 years later with this beautiful discounted secondhand West Elm rug, and I’d say it’s just about as good as the first day we had it. It’s faded a bit in the sun, but you really can’t tell unless you lift up the couch (0/10 do not recommend) and there’s just one spot where one of our kids has some sort of explosive bodily function and we didn’t catch it in time, but other than THAT it looks great. (And actually that little discolored spot isn’t actually that noticeable! Though now I bet you’re looking for it in all the pictures…)

I would have loved a wool rug in our kids’ room, but I’m constantly battling within myself between natural and CHEAP and for that one, I went cheap. IKEA had a nice, durable, fluffy, solid-colored synthetic rug in the as-is section for like $60, so I went for it! I thought about getting something “fun” and “kiddy,” but I’m actually really glad I went with a solid charcoal. It makes other things in the room stand out, and since our kids’ room is at times just an extension of the living room, it goes well with the living room decor.

And in case you were wondering whatever happened to that beloved cowhide rug from the early days of La Casa Almodovar, well, it stayed folded up in a closet for a couple of years until I finally admitted to myself we’d never need it again and that it was okay to pass it on. We did try it in our room from time to time, but the shedding was annoying, and we decided we actually preferred a no-rug look in the bedroom.
Anyway! If you’re on the market for a new (or secondhand!) rug, trying to decide between wool vs synthetic carpet, let’s get into it!
The Natural Beauty of Wool
Wool carpets, typically made from the fleece of sheep, have been a popular choice for centuries, and for good reason. The natural beauty and luxurious feel of wool are hard to beat. But when you’re deciding between wool vs synthetic carpet, is wool the best choice for families? Let’s go through some pros + cons.
Pros of Wool Carpets:
- Durability: Thanks to its natural elasticity, wool can maintain its original shape for a long time. This makes it an excellent choice for high-traffic areas like the living room or dining room. (Or in our case, the living/dining room!)
- Stain Resistance: Wool contains natural oils that make it naturally stain resistant. While it’s not completely stain-proof, it’s often easier to clean than its synthetic counterparts. (See Item A: the explosive bodily fluid of a small child on the northeast corner of the living room rug in La Casa Almodovar.)
- Indoor Air Quality: As a natural insulator, wool can absorb water vapor and other pollutants, potentially improving your home’s indoor air quality.
- Comfort: The natural fibres of wool provide a soft, comfortable surface that’s perfect for young children to play on.
- Noise Reduction: Wool’s dense, overlapping structure makes it excellent for noise reduction – a bonus for families in small spaces or apartments.
Cons of Wool Carpets:
- Cost: Wool carpets are generally more expensive than synthetic options, which can be a concern for families with budget constraints. This is where secondhand comes in, but PLEASE be careful with buying rugs secondhand / used. You never know who’s thrown up on that thing.
- Maintenance: While naturally resistant to stains, wool carpets may require more frequent professional cleaning to maintain their appearance over longer periods. We have used a carpet cleaner sparingly on ours (specifically on the gross kid story I keep referring to), but mostly we’re afraid to go too deep and damage the rug.
- Fading: Wool can fade if exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods. This has happened to us, but we’re honestly okay with it. You can’t really tell.
- Vulnerability to Pests: Carpet beetle larvae can be attracted to wool, although this is less common with modern treatments. This is disgusting, I’ll admit, and fortunately it’s never happened to us.

The Practicality of Synthetic Carpets
Synthetic carpets, including nylon carpet, polyester carpets, and polypropylene carpets, have come a long way in recent years. They offer several advantages that make them worth considering for family homes especially if you’re between wool vs synthetic carpet.
Pros of Synthetic Carpets:
- Affordability: Synthetic fiber carpets are often more budget-friendly options, allowing families to get a new carpet without breaking the bank.
- Stain Resistance: Many synthetic fibers are engineered to have high levels of stain resistance, making them great for homes with young children. Ruggable is a great option for this, especially since you can wash it–for more info on our experience with Ruggable, check out this post.
- Durability: Especially in the case of nylon, synthetic fibres can be incredibly durable, standing up well to heavy foot traffic.
- Easy Maintenance: Synthetic rugs are often easier to clean and maintain, requiring less frequent professional cleaning than wool. We’ve gone to TOWN with our carpet cleaner on the synthetic rug in our kids’ room. The dirty water at the end is gross but oh so satisfying.
- Variety: Synthetic materials offer a wide range of colors and styles, making it easier to find the perfect carpet for your home’s aesthetic.
Cons of Synthetic Carpets:
- Environmental Impact: The manufacturing process of synthetic carpets can be less eco-friendly than that of natural wool. So basically if you care about baby sea turtles, you better get a wool rug.
- Comfort: While technology has improved, some people find that synthetic carpets don’t quite match the comfort and luxurious feel of wool.
- Static Electricity: Some synthetic fibers can generate static electricity, which can be annoying and even potentially harmful to electronic devices.
- Off-Gassing: New synthetic carpets may release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for a short period after installation, which could affect indoor air quality. (…Apparently! I just learned this and honestly don’t know much about it but found it fascinating and wanted to share with you.)

Making the Choice: Wool vs Synthetic carpet for Families
When deciding between wool and synthetic carpets for your family home, consider these factors:
- Budget: If cost is your primary concern, synthetic options may be the better choice. However, remember that the durability of wool might make it more cost-effective over years of use.
- Lifestyle: For families with young children or pets, the enhanced stain resistance of many synthetic carpets might make them a great choice.
- Allergies: If anyone in your family has allergies, wool’s natural hypoallergenic properties could make it the better option.
- Eco-Friendliness: If environmental impact is important to you, natural wool carpets might align better with your values.
- Maintenance: Consider how much time and effort you’re willing to put into carpet care. Synthetic rugs often require less maintenance.
- Aesthetics: While both types can be beautiful, the natural elegance of wool is hard to replicate. However, synthetics offer a wider range of color options.
Caring for Your wool vs synthetic Carpet: Tips for Families
Regardless of whether you choose wool or synthetic, proper care will extend the life of your carpet:
- Vacuum regularly. This is especially important in high traffic areas. Remember that a wool rug will need to be vacuumed a LOT in the beginning, until it stops shedding as much.
- Address spills immediately. Blot (don’t rub) water-based stains with a clean, damp cloth. For greasy spills, use a appropriate cleaning solution. (Honestly we rub stains out of anxiety, so no judgment if that’s you, too.)
- Keep your floors clean. Place doormats at entrances to reduce the amount of dirt tracked onto your carpet. And don’t wear shoes inside past the entryway!
- Consider professional cleaning. Whether you have wool carpeting or a synthetic carpet, professional cleaning every 12-18 months can keep it looking its best. Honestly have never done this and will never do this because I definitely don’t envision any of us getting that rug out from under our sectional, rolling it up, and carrying it down 5 flights and to wherever in the world we’d have to have this done BUT if this works for you, go for it! Enjoy knowing that your professionally-cleaned carpet will always and forever be cleaner than mine.
- Rotate furniture: This helps prevent excessive wear in specific areas.
Final Thoughts on wool vs synthetic carpet
Choosing between wool and synthetic carpets isn’t always straightforward, especially for families. Your decision will depend on your specific needs, personal preference, and circumstances. Both natural materials and synthetic materials have their place in modern homes.
Remember, the perfect carpet for your family is one that meets your practical needs, fits your budget, and makes your space feel like home. Whether you opt for the natural fibres of wool or the practicality of synthetics, the good news is that both can provide comfort and style for years of use.
Whichever type of rug you choose, it’s a good idea to request samples and test them in your space before making a final decision. At the very least, make sure to spend hours obsessing over rug pictures on Pinterest to see what different options are out there and how they might look in your space. This way, you can see and feel the differences for yourself and make the best choice for your family’s home.
