Best Umbrella Strollers: Tested in NYC & Flights 2026

Last Updated on August 9, 2026 by La Casa Almodovar

Finding the perfect umbrella stroller for navigating NYC streets, subway stations, and flying with kids can feel overwhelming. After testing several models over the years with my three children, I’m sharing the best umbrella stroller options for city living and travel that I’ve personally used and can confidently recommend.

The first thing I added to my baby registry was a stroller. And not just any stroller–a compact travel stroller that was as fancy as it was functional and could live up to the demands of being an everyday stroller. It needed to be lightweight and easy enough to carry that I could lug it and my baby up five flights of stairs solo every day. And when I found said stroller, I was SET. I think I was almost as excited to have a new stroller as to have a new baby, ha!

The stroller we landed on ended up being a great choice for many years, but since then I’ve found other great options. Of course, there’s no one perfect anything (and a stroller is no exception!), but if you’re looking for the best travel stroller for NYC or whatever other bustling city you live in, keep reading!

When I tell you I have tried my fair share of strollers, I promise you — I’m not exaggerating.

Why NYC Parents Need the Best Umbrella Stroller

Living in New York City with children presents unique challenges that make choosing the right stroller crucial. Unlike suburban parents who might prioritize full-size strollers with a large storage basket or all-terrain wheels, city dwellers need something completely different. We’re looking for the best strollers with a lightweight frame and a handy carry strap that can take up minimal space and easily navigate narrow doorways and narrow sidewalks.

The best umbrella stroller for NYC needs to be lightweight yet sturdy enough to handle uneven sidewalks. It should navigate tight spaces in shops and restaurants while still providing a smooth ride for your child. Additionally, since many city parents rely on public transportation, having a compact fold that’s easy to manage while juggling a child is essential.

When you live in a walkup apartment like we do, carrying a stroller up several flights of stairs daily is reality. (Though, thankfully, not my reality anymore since we now use our car as storage space!) Therefore, finding a truly lightweight stroller with a convenient shoulder strap can be life-changing for parents in the city.

I thought that with our second kid, we would just baby wear and push a stroller, but honestly a double stroller is so much more convenient and comfortable! Single + baby wearing is totally doable, though.

What Makes a Great NYC Umbrella Stroller?

Before diving into specific models I’ve tested, let’s identify the essential features that make an umbrella stroller suitable for New York City living:

Lightweight Design

When you’re carrying your stroller up subway stairs or into your apartment building, every pound matters. The best umbrella stroller for NYC should ideally weigh under 15 pounds, with the lightest options around 10-12 pounds. Because remember, you’re gonna be carrying a stroller AND your 1-year-old son, so wouldn’t you prefer for the baby to be the heavy one in this scenario?

Compact Fold

Space is premium in NYC apartments. A good city stroller should fold small enough to tuck away in tight spaces. Bonus points if it stands when folded! We used to have a hook behind the front door of our apartment where we could hang our stroller–tucked away but ready for everyday use.

Maneuverability

NYC sidewalks are crowded, stores are tight, and you’ll constantly be weaving through people. Your stroller should turn on a dime and navigate narrow spaces easily.

Durability

New York City streets can be rough. From potholed sidewalks to cobblestone streets in certain neighborhoods, your stroller needs to handle less-than-smooth surfaces while providing a comfortable ride. If and when you find yourself on cobblestone streets, you’re going to be glad you went with the lightest option so that you can just carry the damn thing instead of trying to push through it (literally).

Transit-Friendly Features

The best umbrella stroller for NYC should be easy to fold quickly when hopping on a bus, taking the stairs out of the train station, or grabbing a cab.

Travel Compatibility

Many city families don’t own cars but do travel. A great NYC stroller should be airplane-friendly, potentially fitting in overhead compartments and being lightweight enough to manage in airports. Bonus points if your stroller even fits down the aisle of the airplane on your way to your seat.

My Personally Tested Top Umbrella Strollers for NYC Living

After years of personal experience with several models, here are the strollers I’ve actually used and can speak to firsthand as contenders for the best umbrella stroller for NYC families.

Babyzen YOYO – The Original Game-Changer

The Babyzen YOYO revolutionized the compact stroller market and remains one of the best umbrella stroller options for city parents years after its introduction.

Weight: 13.6 lbs

Price Point: $499 (higher end) + extra cost for accessories

What I Love:

  • Extremely compact fold that fits in most airplane overhead compartments
  • Narrow frame that fits down the aisle of most airplanes
  • Smooth ride despite small wheels
  • Can be used from birth with infant pack or car seat adapters + infant car seat
  • Remarkably nimble in tight spaces like narrow store aisles
  • Comes with a dust bag and shoulder strap
  • Adequate storage basket considering its compact size
  • Washable fabrics

Drawbacks:

  • Not actually a true one-handed fold
  • Premium price point
  • Storage basket access is somewhat limited because of stroller frame underneath
  • All accessories sold separately (and not cheap!): rain cover, leg rest, car seat adapters, cup holder
  • Brake isn’t the easiest to maneuver (you have to lift it with your toe, can be uncomfortable with open-toe shoes)
  • Wheels ALWAYS get stuck when you’re trying to open or close the stroller

The YOYO has been my personal best friend through countless subway trips, international flights, and daily walks around the city. Its ability to fold small enough to fit in overhead compartments made air travel significantly easier, and I can confidently say it’s one of the smoothest-riding compact strollers available.

This stroller has become something of a status symbol among NYC parents – you’ll spot them everywhere from Central Park to Brooklyn coffee shops. However, its popularity is well-deserved based on performance alone.

And despite its list of drawbacks, I still highly recommend it! This is the one we added to our baby registry, and it’s the first stroller I ever pushed as a new mom!

I fell in love with this stroller early on in my pregnancy with our first kid. It really is an excellent stroller!

Stokke YOYO 3 – The New Version

Building on the success of the original YOYO, the Stokke YOYO 3 brings new elements maintaining the features that made its predecessor so popular among city parents.

Weight: 14 lbs

Price Point: $550 (premium)

What I Love:

  • Improved suspension for a smoother ride on NYC sidewalks
  • Enhanced storage space compared to previous models
  • Cute color options and premium fabrics
  • Still compact enough for overhead airplane compartments
  • Higher weight capacity for growing toddlers

Drawbacks:

  • Even more expensive than the original
  • Wheels get stuck, not a true one-hand fold, basically just see above for the things I’ve never liked about the Yoyo
  • I think the “upgrades” are dumb (a pillow? what?!)
  • I’m just sour that they’d change a bunch of things but none of them are things I actually wanted
  • Two-handed recline is cumbersome

Stokke’s acquisition of Babyzen has resulted in…interesting…improvements to the already excellent YOYO design. Personally, if I were to buy a Yoyo today, I’d go for either the Babyzen model instead of the Stokke one. Check out my videos featuring the Stokke Yoyo 3 here and here and here.

I’m sorry, but this stroller just isn’t as good as it used to be!

Joolz Aer+ – The Sleek City Stroller

The Joolz Aer+ combines Dutch design with practical city features, making it one of the best compact stroller options for on-the-go NYC parents.

Weight: 13.4 lbs

Price Range: $399-$449

What I Love:

  • Incredibly smooth push and maneuverability
  • Premium fabrics that don’t dirty easily
  • One-handed fold with integrated transport lock
  • Stands upright when folded
  • Ergonomic seat with multiple recline positions
  • Large, easily accessible storage basket
  • Extendable sun canopy with UPF 50+ protection
  • Comfortable padded seat with good support
  • Easy-to-adjust harness without rethreading for smaller or bigger kids

Drawbacks:

  • Higher price point
  • Personally I think the Yoyo is prettier
  • Sometimes the wheels get stuck when you’re trying to fold it
  • Lots of straps sitting on top of your kid (it’s just the design of the adjustment)
  • Zippered canopy extension can be hard to grab the zipper pull
  • Zippered seat recline is cumbersome and annoying (it’s hard to get the adjuster and fabric back inside to zip it closed)
  • Car seat adapters and other accessories cost extra

The Joolz Aer+ excels at providing a premium experience in a lightweight package. The push feels more like a full-size stroller than an umbrella model, which makes a difference when you’re walking miles around NYC daily. Though of course it’s not a perfect stroller (and no one stroller is!), I think the Joolz Aer+ is a great option and one of the best city strollers out there.

The Joolz Aer+ is an excellent option for travel or for everyday use for families who need something lightweight and easily foldable.

ZOE Traveler – The Affordable Game-Changer (The #1 BesT Umbrella Stroller for NYC)

The ZOE Traveler has quickly become one of my favorite recommendations for NYC parents seeking a high-quality stroller without the premium price tag.

Weight: 13 lbs

Price Range: $249 (Save $15 through my affiliate link here!)

What I Love:

  • Incredibly lightweight at just 13 pounds
  • Outstanding value for the price
  • Easy one-handed fold
  • Stands when folded
  • Generous canopy with magnetic peekaboo window
  • Impressive storage capacity for such a lightweight stroller (I love the fold-down end of the storage basket for when my 3-year-old poops out on his scooter and wants me to take it)
  • Cup holder and snack cup included (no need to purchase separately)
  • Comfortable padded seat with deep recline
  • Smooth maneuverability even on NYC sidewalks
  • Easy to recline with one hand

Drawbacks:

  • Not quite as premium-feeling as the high-end models
  • Small cargo basket underneath
  • Not available at places like Buy Buy Baby, Albee Baby, or Amazon (but this is actually a plus that makes it cheaper for you!)

The ZOE Traveler is honestly one of the best values in the stroller market today. For less than half the price of some premium competitors, you get a truly functional, thoughtfully designed stroller that doesn’t feel like a compromise. I’ve recommended this stroller to countless friends who have been amazed at how much quality they get for the price, and this is the single stroller that I’m using these days!

What makes the ZOE Traveler particularly suited for NYC living is its ultra-lightweight design combined with features you’d expect from much pricier models. When you’re carrying a stroller up five flights of stairs, those 2-3 pounds difference compared to premium models makes a noticeable difference. And for families who travel frequently, the quick fold make airport navigation significantly easier. Take a peek at the Traveler in my unboxing video here.

In making this post, I realized I don’t have any photos of this one in action. But the Zoe Traveler has become our everyday stroller!

Best Double Umbrella Strollers for NYC

Having multiple children in the city presents additional challenges, and the ZOE Twin+ has been my go-to recommendation for families with twins or siblings close in age.

ZOE Twin+ – The Ultimate Lightweight Double

Weight: 23 lbs

Price Range: $529 (Save $15 through my affiliate link here!)

What I Love:

  • Incredibly lightweight for a double stroller (many singles weigh more!)
  • Individual canopies and reclines for each seat
  • Independent adjustable footrests
  • Slim enough to fit through standard doorways (a must for NYC)
  • Easy fold that takes just a second
  • Small enough when folded to fit in the back of my compact SUV that’s already full of kids’ bikes and scooters
  • Includes parent cup holder and child snack cups
  • Generous storage space underneath
  • Removable belly bars for each seat
  • Stands when folded
  • Available in fun, vibrant colors
  • Surprisingly affordable compared to most double strollers
  • Rain cover is intelligently designed and covers your stroller caddy while still making it easily accessible (sold separately)
  • Thoughtfully designed stroller organizer bag (sold separately)
  • Car seat-compatible with adapters (sold separately)
  • Side-by-side design (always easier to push than one seat behind the other)

Drawbacks:

  • Not suitable from birth without additional accessories
  • It’s hard to get up over curbs. Normally I would put my foot on the back bottom bar to then lift up the front wheels, but the brake bar gets in the way of this.
  • Handlebar is too short (depth-wise, not height from the ground); I wish it were longer so I could stand further from the stroller and not kick the wheels.

The ZOE Twin+ has been a game-changer for my friends with twins and siblings close in age. At just 23 pounds, it’s remarkably manageable even in a walkup apartment.

What makes this stroller especially suited for NYC life is how it manages to be lightweight without sacrificing essential features. The fold is genuinely simple (important when you’re juggling multiple children), and the stroller’s width still fits through standard doorways, which isn’t true of many double options.

For the price point, nothing else on the market offers this combination of lightweight design and useful features. Many of my friends who started with more expensive double strollers eventually switched to the ZOE Twin+ after seeing how much easier it made daily city navigation. If you have multiple children and live in NYC, this stroller deserves a serious look. See the Zoe Twin+ in action here.

Other Double Stroller Options

While I haven’t personally tested the UPPAbaby G-Link 2 extensively, it’s another popular choice among NYC parents with multiple children. The other double stroller we had for a time was the Mountain Buggy Duet. It’s a full-sized (not compact) stroller, which was probably my biggest complaint, because it could be rather bulky. And I found myself more than a few times stuck far from home with a deflated stroller tire.

Important Features to Consider on the best umbrella stroller for NYC

When shopping for the best umbrella stroller for NYC living, pay special attention to these features:

Weight and Portability

In a walkup apartment or when navigating subway stairs, a difference of just a few pounds can be significant. Look for:

  • Strollers under 15 pounds
  • Included shoulder strap
  • Compact fold

Fold Mechanism

When you’re juggling a child, diaper bag, and possibly groceries (though, may I recommend grocery delivery instead?), the fold process matters:

  • One-handed fold is ideal (though many “one-handed” folds actually require two hands in practice)
  • Quick fold process (no complicated steps)
  • Self-standing when folded
  • Automatic lock when folded

Wheel Size and Suspension

NYC sidewalks can be brutal on strollers:

  • Larger wheels handle cracks and uneven surfaces better
  • Front-wheel suspension minimizes jolts
  • Lockable front wheels help on rougher terrain
  • Solid wheels require less maintenance than air-filled ones

Canopy Size

It’s about more than just blocking the sun from their little eyes!

  • Look for UPF 50+ protection
  • Extendable canopies provide better coverage
  • Peekaboo windows let you check on sleeping children
  • Water-resistant materials help in surprise showers

Storage Options

While you’ll likely carry less with an umbrella stroller, some storage is still essential:

  • Accessible basket (even when seat is reclined)
  • Pocket or stroller caddy for phone/keys/MetroCard
  • Cup holder attachment options (though personally I’ve never needed this!)
  • Easy access while walking

Best Umbrella Stroller Accessories for NYC Parents

Enhance your city stroller experience with these must-have accessories:

Parent Console

A small attachment that provides:

  • Secure phone storage
  • Coffee cup holder (essential for many NYC parents!)
  • Small items storage for MetroCards, keys, etc.

I particularly love the Joolz Aer+ stroller organizer for its ample storage space and functionality. The ZOE organizers are also excellent options that firmly attach and have a sleek design.

Stroller Hooks

These can allow you to:

  • Hang shopping bags safely
  • Keep your handbag accessible
  • Attach toys for entertainment

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE: Be extremely careful with stroller hooks and never overload them! Too much weight on the handlebar can cause the stroller to tip backward, creating a serious safety hazard. Always test stability after hanging anything, and never hang heavy items or multiple bags.

Weather Protection

In a walking city, being prepared for weather is crucial:

  • Rain cover (some strollers include these, others sell separately)
  • Sunshade extension for extra protection
  • Insulated stroller muff for winter months

Travel Bag

If you’ll be flying or storing your stroller:

  • Padded bag protects from damage
  • Shoulder strap makes airport navigation easier
  • Water-resistant material protects from weather

FAQ About Umbrella Strollers for NYC

Can I use an umbrella stroller from birth?

Most traditional umbrella strollers aren’t suitable from birth because they lack the necessary support for newborns. However, several modern compact strollers like the Zoe Traveler or Zoe Twin+ offer newborn solutions through car seat adapters, bassinets, or special inserts. Always check the manufacturer’s guidelines for age recommendations.

How do I manage subway stairs with a stroller?

This is where having a truly lightweight stroller with a shoulder strap makes a difference. When possible, look for stations with elevators (the MTA has an accessibility map). When stairs are unavoidable, most NYC parents ask for help from a fellow passenger or just fold the stroller and carry it while holding their child.

Are expensive strollers really worth it for city living?

The price difference often comes down to materials, engineering, and design refinement. More expensive models typically offer smoother pushing, more compact folds, and better durability. For daily use in a demanding environment like NYC, investing in a quality stroller often pays off in longevity and reduced frustration. However, there are certainly budget options like the Summer Infant 3D Lite that perform admirably for less frequent use.

Can umbrella strollers handle NYC winters?

Most umbrella strollers aren’t designed for snow or slush. For serious winter weather, I recommend baby wearing instead! Here are my best baby wearing resources for you:

How long do children typically use strollers in NYC?

Personally, I find that city kids are used to walking longer distances and for that reason often don’t need strollers as late as suburban kids. While every family is different, many NYC children use strollers for some situations until age 4-5, particularly for longer outings or when parents need to cover substantial distances quickly. Around age 4, many NYC kids transition to scooters or balance bikes, which provide them independence while still allowing families to cover ground faster than walking pace.

Strollers are easily one of my favorite baby gear items to research and test out. Remember you can always reach out with questions!

Final Thoughts on Finding Your Perfect NYC Stroller

The best umbrella stroller for NYC living will ultimately depend on your specific situation – your budget, the age of your child, your living arrangement, and how you typically get around the city.

For families in walkup apartments who rely heavily on public transportation, prioritize weight and carrying features like shoulder straps. If you frequently travel, consider models that fit in overhead compartments. For those who walk miles daily, suspension and push quality become more important.

Remember that no stroller is perfect for every situation. Many NYC families end up with multiple options – perhaps a more robust stroller for challenging weather and long outings, and a lightweight umbrella stroller for quick trips and travel. Finding what works for your family might take some trial and error, but hopefully this guide gives you a solid starting point.
